Welcome to Being Thankful for the Little Things, our annual November Thanksgiving family devotional series. This year, we’re focusing on being thankful for the little stuff, the things we often take for granted. Each devotional is meant to be read as a family. At the end of each devotional, you’ll find a journaling prompt (you can download a free journal cover and pages here) and an action step you can take to help out someone else. Thanks for joining us and be sure to share it with your friends via Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.
I love free things. One of my favorite things to do is to go to Costco at lunchtime because they give out all sorts of free samples. I mean, who doesn't like getting something for nothing, right? It makes me smile when someone hands me something and expects nothing in return.
Sometimes, though, those free offers that you get come with a catch. My mail is loaded with people offering me something for "free" but when you read more closely, you find that you have to buy something or do a survey to get your "free" gift. If you have to give something in return for the gift, then it's not free.
The greatest free gift we've ever been given is Jesus. God sent Jesus to the earth to die and rise again so that we could have a relationship with God. There are no strings attached and no hidden catches to accepting the free gift of Jesus. We don't have to do anything to earn the gift. There's no list of items to check off before we can receive the gift. The gift of Jesus is truly free.
Ephesians 2:8-9 says, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." We have been given a free gift in Jesus. All we have to do is pull off the bow, unwrap the package and follow Jesus.
What do you think about that? There's no greater gift that anyone can give you. God is offering you the gift of His Son so that you can live forever with Him, so that you can have a relationship with God. That's greatest gift that anyone can ever give you. Today, be thankful for the free stuff God gave us in Jesus.
Journal entry: Write down three things that are free that you are thankful for. Don't forget to put Jesus on the list.
Action step: Give someone a gift today. Offer them something free. It can be anything from a piece of gum to a gift card. When they ask why you're giving them a gift, tell them it's a reminder of the free gift God gave you in Jesus.
