My baby girl turned 13 yesterday. She's officially a teenager.

There's something about having your youngest child enter her teens. Childhood in your house is officially over. You've got five years left until they're 18.

When my girls were babies, people told me the time would fly. I didn't understand then what they meant. Sure there have been long days, hours, even minutes, but the years have flown, and I'm now the mom to two teenage girls. My job is less hand holding and more pushing out of the nest.

It's become a tradition for me to use this space to offer up a birthday prayer for each of my girls on their birthdays. So, this one is for my sweet baby girl as she turns 13.

A Birthday Prayer for My 14-Year-Old

Birthday prayer The child who made me a mom turns 14 today. I'm not really sure where the years have gone. It's hard to believe the amazing young lady standing in front of me today is the same pixie-haired, wide-eyed toddler of just a few years ago. She has become a young lady that I am proud to know -- one filled with a love for Jesus and a huge heart for others. Even as we sometimes struggle through the ups and downs of the teenage years, my love for this child just continues to grow. So, here's my prayer for her this year:

A Birthday Prayer

I pray that you will always know you are loved.

I pray that you will never lose your joy for life or your reason to smile.

I pray that you will always chase after God as hard as you are chasing him right now.

I pray that you will have wisdom as you make difficult decisions.

I pray that you will be a light to other people.

I pray that when you get knocked down that you never lose the determination to get back up.

I pray that you will approach each new challenge and experience with confidence and a spirit that never gives up.

I pray that when you are feeling down that you will be surrounded by friends who will pick you up.

I pray that you will always look up when things are tough.

I pray that you will know more laughter than tears this year.

I pray that as you embark on these last four years before college that God will direct your steps to lead you on His path for your future.

I pray that you will never have to walk the path of life alone.

I pray that you will have fun and make memories that will last your whole life.

I pray that you will continue to grow in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

My precious, precious child, you are so very loved. You are the child I prayed for and have loved from the moment I knew about you. Happy, happy birthday, sweet girl!

A Birthday Prayer for My 12-Year-Old

Birthday prayer My younger daughter turns 12 tomorrow. I have no idea where the time has gone, but watching her grow up is one of the great joys of my life. This child has taught me so much. She has challenged me in ways I didn't know I could be challenged. And she has always shown me that it takes courage and strength to be the person God created you to be.

So as this precious child of my heart turns 12, this is my prayer for her.

A Birthday Prayer

I pray you know more joy and laughter this year than you know tears and sorrow.

I pray you never forget that God created you to be you -- no matter what anyone else says.

I pray you continue to grow in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

I pray that you will never lose your zest to learn something new.

I pray that you will learn to look before you leap but that you will never lose your enthusiasm for doing the things you love.

I pray that you will continue to look around you and see the needs of others. And that you will then meet those needs.

I pray that you will be surrounded by good friends who will make you laugh, carry your burdens and encourage you to seek God.

I pray that you will continue to grow closer to God and that you will make Him a priority in your life.

I pray that you will be healthy and strong.

I pray that you will never lose sight of what's important in life.

I pray that you will never be swayed by anyone telling you the things that you are passionate about aren't the right things.

I pray that you will be a good friend to others.

I pray that you will never believe anyone who tells you that who you are isn't good enough.

I pray that you will always know that you are loved.

Precious child of mine, I pray that your coming year is a great one. I pray that even when you are lonely, frustrated, scared or sad that you will know that we have your back and more importantly that God has your back. I thank God every day that He gave you to us. Our life is richer and full of so much more joy with you in it. No matter what this year holds, remember you are precious and you are loved.

A Birthday Prayer for My 11-year-old

Birthday prayer14

Eleven years ago today, our world changed forever. It was just after midnight on Good Friday that our second daughter was placed in our arms. We had no idea what an adventure life with her would be.

So, today, on her 11th birthday, I wanted to share with you my prayer for her.

A Birthday Prayer for My 11-year-old

Sweet child of mine, here you stand on in the in-between, not yet a teen, yet not still a child. Middle school looms ahead of you next year. You're getting ready to cross from the days of childhood into the days of young womanhood. As you do, these are the things I pray for you.

May you never lose your sense of adventure.

May you always remember that no matter how steep the mountain, God is always with you.

May you always know you are loved.

May you never lose the attitude that you don't have to be like everyone else.

May you always follow the path God has laid out for you.

When things get tough, may you always seek God's guidance and comfort.

May you always know that home is a safe place. We'll always be here with love, hugs and advice.

May you never outgrow your desire to pull for the underdog.

May you continue to learn to be a leader.

May you never lose the toughness that makes you stand strong under difficult circumstances.

May you always look on those around you with compassion and love.

May you learn from your defeats and cherish your victories.

May you always make loving God and loving others your to priorities.

Precious child of mine, you have grown so much in the past year. I know there are so many more adventures to come. We can't wait to see where they take you.

A Birthday Prayer

My younger daughter turns 10 today. It's hard to believe I no longer have any children in single digits. My days of tea parties and fairy tales are behind me. We're fast approaching the teen years with both girls. While I'm going to miss the innocence and wonder of that first decade, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of young woman my daughter becomes in the next one.

Last year, I started writing each of my girls a birthday prayer. Here's this year's for my younger daughter. Consider writing your own prayer for each of your kids on their birthdays. There's no better gift we can give our kids than the knowledge that their parents are praying for them.

A Birthday Prayer

As you turn 10, these are the things I pray for you for the coming year.

I pray you'll know more joy than sorrow.

I pray your laughter will ring through the heavens and draw others to you.

I pray you'll seek after God with your whole heart and let Him guide your choices.

I pray you'll find joy even on the days when there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel.

I pray you'll be healthy, and your body will continue to grow strong.

I pray nothing will ever crush your feisty spirit.

I pray you'll use your talents to lead others well.

I pray that when obstacles appear in your path, you'll have enough determination to not let them stop you.

I pray that the year will hold plenty of surprises that will both bring you joy and teach you new things.

I pray that you never stop learning.

I pray that you never stop smiling.

I pray that your friendships will grow deeper and that you'll find those friends who will stick by your side no matter what.

I pray that you'll be open to accepting direction and wisdom from those who have walked the road before you.

I pray that when you have tough days, you'll always know that God loves you and so do we.

Reckless Love and a Birthday Prayer

Eleven years ago, I was impatiently awaiting the arrival of our first child. She was five days overdue, I was huge and miserable. I was also a bit scared of what was to come. It was my last day before motherhood arrived.

Tomorrow my firstborn child turns 11. I've often said that monkeys could raise her; she's that easy. She was the baby who never cried unless something was wrong. She was the child that always sought to follow the rules. And she is now the young lady who seeks to create compromise and works to include everyone. But God didn't give her monkeys; he gave her me.

Before she arrived on June 1, 2001, I thought I knew what it meant to love someone. I had no idea. I didn't know that motherhood meant that I would hurt when someone hurt her. I didn't know that loving her would sometimes turn me into a "momma bear." I didn't know how hard it would be to let go of her hand on the first day of kindergarten or how many tears I would shed on the last day of elementary school.

In the song "All of Me" by Matt Hammitt, there's a line that says: I'm gonna recklessly love you, even if I bleed. I had no idea what that type of reckless love looked like until I became a mom. I didn't know that I would bleed when she did until those bright blue eyes looked into mine for the first time.

As my older daughter stands on the cusp of the teenage years, I pray these things for her:

I pray you always remember that you are a masterpiece in God's eyes. Never let anyone else's words take away the power of God's words.

I pray you continue to seek God's direction for your life as you begin to make more decisions on your own.

I pray the world will never make you lose the compassion you have for others.

I pray you'll always have a forgiving spirit.

I pray you'll never lose your grit and determination.

I pray when tough times come, you'll always know you're loved.

I pray you'll make wise choices when it comes to friends -- and, yes, even boyfriends.

I pray you'll always feel free to be yourself.

I pray you'll never forget that God loves you -- and so do we.

I know the next few years may be tricky -- for both my daughter and me. Navigating the waters of the preteen and teen years is never easy, for parents or kids. I know that she'll have days where she's hurt, and I'll have days where the reckless love of mommyhood means I'll bleed. But I also know that she'll always be a "heritage from the Lord" (Psalm 127:3) and I'll do my best to help her "grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man" (Luke 2:52).

June 1, 2001, was a day my life changed forever. It was the day I gained the name I'll be known by for the rest of my life, "Mommy." And I wouldn't change it because even though it means tears, heartache and frustration. It also means laughter, fun and joy beyond any I've ever known.

Happy birthday, firstborn child of mine.

A Birthday Prayer

My younger daughter turns 9 today. She is the child who fills our world with laughter. She may be small in stature, but she has the heart of a lion. She is the life of the party and a light to the world. Her strong will and different way of looking at the world challenge us regularly, but our lives would not be nearly so interesting without her. We were blessed nine years ago when she was born. As we celebrate her birthday, today's blog is for her. This is my prayer for her for the coming year.

I pray:

You grow physicially, emotionally and spiritually.

You face any obstacles with strength and courage.

You learn to be content.

You find joy in all circumstances.

You will always know that home is a place where you are loved -- no matter what.

You choose friends who will build you up and help you grow.

You never lose the fiery spirit God gave you.

You will never hesitate to dust yourself off and get back in the fight when the world knocks you down.

You show compassion and love to others.

You rely on God for wisdom and strength.

You will love without hesitation.

You build others up with your words and that others would not tear you down with theirs.

You will have plenty of time to bask in the innocence of childhood.

You will always know you are a fearfully and wonderfully made.

You will never doubt you are loved.

I love you.
